Workshop Description:
This relief printmaking workshop introduces participants to image-making using styrofoam plates as an accessible alternative to traditional relief blocks. Intended to be done with both parent and child, this workshop will open new possibilities for expression for both children and adults. Through an intuitive, hands-on process, carve a unique drawing into a styrofoam block and explore how pressure, line quality, and repetition shape the final image to create a small edition of expressive relief prints.
About the instructor:
Born and raised in The Bronx to Dominican immigrant parents, Vanezza Cruz grew up surrounded by color, pattern, and imagination. A mixed media artist and graphic designer with early training in fine arts and music (cello), she graduated Cum Laude from FIT with a BFA in Graphic Design. After working in the fashion industry as a graphic designer, she pursued an MFA in Fine Arts at Lehman College.
In her current creative practice, Cruz explores drawing, monoprints, collage, installations, and a range of other creative experiments. Her work examines body image, beauty standards, cultural identity, colorism, aging, and representations of women of color, informed by her lived experience as a dark-skinned AfroLatina. She works across printmaking, painting, illustration, assemblage, collage, and installation.
Cruz has exhibited her work in solo and group shows throughout New York City, the Dominican Republic, and across the United States. In addition to her studio practice, she shares her expertise as a teaching artist and muralist, creating projects that engage communities in hands-on creative exploration.
